What is a sonic spell?[edit]
Looks like an IP editor, 71.218.93.137, has decided that Wail of the Banshee does not fall into the grouping of A form of energy attack based on sound properties, often dealing sonic damage. despite it being typed as a sonic spell. I've reverted this change and we can discuss the properties of the spell. I'm curious where the line is on if it is or isn't a sonic spell. Can creatures that can't hear be affected? This (Wail of the Banshee) has long been listed as a "sonic" spell (at least in part). Is that inaccurate? Just confirming before removing that {category} tag.⇒ C-Hound (Contribs • Message • Email) 00:41, May 11, 2020 (EDT)
- It is a sonic spell in PnP. Do you have a sorc 18 air savant and check the combat log to see if you're casting wail at higher caster level than non-air spells? I tried googling around ddo forums but did not find an answer. --⇒ Cru121 (Contribs • Message • Email) 02:09, May 11, 2020 (EDT)

- Just because it doesn't mention a caster level, doesn't mean there isn't one. Caster level affects Spell Penetration. You can test how high the spell pen is. — previous unsigned

I could indeed also test it via dualboxing, but I don't have to, because: (2) You probably have not observed combat logs much. Normally, caster level is not displayed in the combat log. If you have effects that increase your caster level with a particular spell, the combat log will mention this exceptional case with the sentence "You begin to cast xxx at level yyy". --⇒ Cru121 (Contribs • Message • Email) 10:00, May 11, 2020 (EDT)

- Did a little digging and found some other possibly related stuff/similar situation with Storm of Vengeance which "Conjures a storm with a massive thunderclap, deafening enemies"... That also seems like a "sonic" effect to me if it causes deafness. Possibly we could get a few people together and deafen some creatures with SoV and then see if they're affected by WotB being unable to hear? Just an idea to test how the system works. I can also ask Cordovan (Contribs • Message • Email • Cordovan) if he can look into it and help us figure out if they're actually considered "sonic" by the game. ⇒ DDOstream (Contribs • Message • Email) 10:02, May 13, 2020 (EDT)
